MIPS Technologies licenses 32-Bit architecture to Intrisity for development of 2-GHz processorsIntrinsity to Target Wireless and Wired Infrastructure Markets with High-Performance, Multi-Gigahertz Processor Intrinsity will use the 32-bit MIPS® Instruction-Set Architecture with its patented Fast14™ Technology to develop what promises to be the highest-performance MIPS-based™ embedded processors on the market. The company recently proved its breakthrough technology with a processor-based test chip that hit speeds of 2.2 GHz in a 0.18-micron process. Wireless and wired infrastructure applications demand more powerful solutions for real time system features. It is rare to find enough performance in an embedded processor that can solve system requirements with software through a scalable processor solution. Scalable, programmable processors also solve system partition problems by moving functions into software previously only solved with ASICS and FPGAs, saving system development cost and time to market for changing standards. "The MIPS32 architecture is the 32-bit gold standard in embedded processing in terms of power-efficient performance and scalability, plus it's open and licensable, which, unlike other architectures, enables us to develop truly innovative solutions," said Paul Nixon, co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Intrinsity. "Intrinsity is breaking new ground and taking 32-bit embedded processing to a whole new performance level with its impressive Fast14 Technology, and we are delighted to be an enabling part of their technology," said John Bourgoin, chairman and chief executive officer of MIPS Technologies. "Like Intrinsity, MIPS Technologies foresees tremendous growth in demand for GHz and higher embedded processors for networking and communications infrastructure. The multi-gigahertz processors that result from this agreement will further broaden an already enormous range of MIPS-based solutions available in the marketplace."
