Resonext Communications Licenses ARM Processor Core For Advanced WI-FI5 (802.11a) Wireless LAN Chipset
CAMBRIDGE, UK and SAN JOSE, CA - Oct. 29, 2001 - ARM [(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions, and Resonext Communications, Inc., an emerging developer of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) semiconductor products, today announced that Resonext has licensed the ARM922T[tm] processor core for integration into its 5Ghz RN5200 WLAN chipsets. Resonext has also licensed the ARM AMBA® on-chip interconnect technology that, along with the ARM922T core, forms the basic building blocks of Resonext's flexible Media Access Controller (MAC) and Access Point-on-a-Chip (APoC) architecture featured in the Resonext's RN5200 client and access point chipsets. Resonext is utilizing the ARM® architecture to develop chipset products that provide the backbone for high-performance, cost-effective and feature-rich 5Ghz WLAN platforms in the enterprise, small business and home markets. Leveraging the promise of high-bandwidth wireless networking over the Wi-Fi5 protocol, Resonext will be delivering samples of its 5Ghz WLAN chipset to OEMs in the first quarter of 2002. "Resonext has partnered with ARM in the development of our Wi-Fi5 chipset because the ARM architecture offers one of the highest performance and power efficient CPUs for the WLAN market," said Marc Mertsching, VP of modem and software engineering, Resonext Communications. "The ARM922T core used in our MAC and access point processing enables us to maximize our product flexibility, differentiation and compatibility with extensive WLAN firmware base." "ARM continues to gain momentum in a broad range of networking applications, and high-performance cores such as the ARM922T microprocessor provide innovators in this space, such as Resonext, with an industry-proven solution to meet the high- throughput requirements of their flexible 802.11a solutions," said Steve Evans, VP, Segment Marketing, ARM. "The ARM Partnership provides Resonext and their customers with the industry's most comprehensive range of third-party support, from development tools and applications software to system peripherals and design services, and will provide Resonext with the microprocessor capabilities needed to introduce next-generation WLAN products ahead of their competition."
