Atmel Announces its Second Generation ARM-based Microcontrollers with Integrated Flash MemoryRousset, France, July 30, 2002... Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced today it has added two high-density Flash memory options to its range of market-leading microcontrollers based on the 32-bit ARM7TDMIYTM RISC core. The newly-available AT91FR4042 and AT91FR40162 integrate respectively 512K bytes and 2M bytes Flash memory. The Flash memories feature a lockable boot block that enables critical startup software modules to be protected, and for the 2-Mbyte version a dual-plane architecture supporting read-while-write. In addition to the Flash, both devices integrate 256K bytes of single clock cycle 32-bit wide SRAM, providing a maximum of 74 MIPS in typical conditions. The AT91FR4042 and AT91FR40162 complement the established AT91FR4081 and AT91F40816 highly integrated SRAM-plus-Flash microcontrollers in extremely small footprint packages. The AT91FR4042 and AT91FR40162 ship in a BGA121 10x10x1.2 mm outline, 0.8 mm ball pitch package. Both devices are pin compatible for ease of upgrade to higher memory densities. Jacko Wilbrink, Atmel's Marketing Manager for ARM®-based microcontrollers commented, "Atmel is a leader in both 8- and 32-bit Flash microcontrollers, enabling us to cover a complete range of cost/performance points. We have design wins for our 32-bit ARM microcontrollers in leading-edge products such as GPS systems, storage devices, telecom networking, point-of-sale terminals and medical products. Our customer base is steadily increasing." The AT91FR4042 and AT91FR40162 integrate a set of general purpose peripherals including two USARTS (Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) with dedicated DMA (Direct Access Memory) channels, three 16-bit timers with capture, compare and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) modes, an External Bus Interface to communicate with external memory-mapped peripherals and a watchdog timer. Both products also feature a power management unit allowing peripheral and processors clocks to be stopped to minimize power consumption. Atmel's business partners provide powerful software development tools including C-compilers, debuggers, sockets and Flash programmers. A complete evaluation kit for the AT91FR40162 and AT91FR4042, the AT91EB40A, is available for only $199. Pricing for the AT91FR4042-CI in a 121-pin BGA package starts at $8.60 each in 100K unit volumes. About Atmel © Atmel Corporation 2002. All rights reserved.
