prpl Foundation Launches prpl.works to Mobilize Open Source DevelopersNew community lets developers share insights, innovation and resources SANTA CLARA, CA, pc. 15, 2015 – The prpl Foundation today revealed prpl.works, an online community by and for open source developers and users. Active for just a few weeks, the community has already reached over 40,000 developers from around the world. “The prpl.works site highlights the important work that prpl and its member companies are doing to encourage collaboration across the open source community,” said Art Swift, president of the prpl Foundation, a non-profit foundation focused on enabling open, next-generation datacenter-to-device portable software and virtualized architectures. “The value to the open source community is evidenced by the site’s rapid adoption, based in part on insightful commentary that the community is providing.” For example, said Swift, a recent post by prpl community manager Eric Schultz, which explores the question of whether the FCC can ban a new operating system, has generated significant discussion across a broad spectrum of open source developers. In addition to its timely and thought-provoking content, the site features subgroups for creators and developers of open source software – such as Android MIPS, Linux MIPS and others – to share and review innovations and resources for the betterment of their respective communities and the open source movement in general. Over time, the site is expected to grow organically to encompass a wide range of open source developments and resources. Current subgroups include:
The announcement of the new prpl.works community parallels the creation by the prpl Foundation of the OpenWrt Summit – the first ever conference focusing exclusively on disruptive OpenWrt technology, which took place in Dublin, Ireland on Oct.8. Designed to encourage growth and collaboration in the OpenWrt movement, the event was co-located with the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE). About prpl prpl (pronounced “Purple”), is an open-source, community-driven, collaborative, non-profit foundation targeting and supporting the MIPS architecture – and open to others – with a focus on enabling next-generation datacenter-to-device portable software and virtualized architectures. prpl represents leaders in the technology industry investing in innovation in efficiency, portability and compatibility for the good of a broad community of developers, businesses and consumers.
