SuperH, Inc. licenses SH-5 CPU core to Server2NetServer2Net to develop SH-5 based SoC for Nfiniti™ Fabric Server
San Jose, California and Bristol, UK - 11 November 2002 - SuperH, Inc. the leading supplier of multimedia RISC CPU cores, today announced that Server2Net, Inc. a developer of ultra high speed, very high density server technology, will license the SH-5 64-bit RISC CPU core.
Server2Net will develop SoC devices for their Nfiniti™ fabric server products. The 64-bit SH-5 core features excellent performance when tackling both the general purpose processing and DSP (digital signal processing) needs which are required for the network edge that Server2Net is targeting. The SH-5 RISC core with its memory management unit (MMU) is ideally suited to the porting of Linux and other UNIX compatible operating systems, all important factors for the server marketplace. The vector FPU (floating point unit) of the SH-5 crunches through security algorithms and the SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) capability makes easy work of streaming applications.
''We are very excited to license the SH-5 to Server2Net for their Nfiniti server products'' said Rick Chapman, vice president of sales and marketing at SuperH.
''We believe that their heterogeneous server architecture is ideally placed to address the market needs for multimedia platforms. The SH-5 is the most efficient 64-bit CPU core on the market which is amply demonstrated by Nfiniti's ability to pack up to 768 CPUs in a system delivering over 7,300GOPS performance.''
''The SuperH SH-5 core provides the high performance with low power consumption which allows us to implement an Nfiniti system with up to 3 racks with 16 blades each with up to 16 processors per blade,'' stated Dr. Vahe Manugian, vice president of engineering for Server2Net. ''This will allow us to produce a high density blade server with up to 256 CPU cores per rack while maintaining the high reliability demanded by the application. At the same time, the SH-5 core based blades integrate well in our heterogeneous, processor agnostic environment which is important for offering flexibility to IT departments using our NFiniti Servers in their data centers.''
SuperH's SuperHyway™ SoC interconnect allows the easy integration of one or multiple SH-5 cores with Server2Net's NPlane non-blocking fabric switch technology in a single integrated circuit along with other critical IP (intellectual property) which vary in different SoC implementations. ''The Server2Net architecture integrates the capabilities of the SH-5 core and SuperHyway with their own NPlane IP,'' said Dr. Andrew Jones, system architecture manager for SuperH. ''The SoC devices Server2Net are planning mesh well with the design goals for high-end multiprocessing platforms from a performance, power consumption and cost perspective for the server market. I am excited to see this type of practical SoC implementation utilizing several of our key technologies together with their own technology.''
