Microsoft, ATI, Philips and Motorola Some of the Leading Electronics Companies Driving MIPS® Architecture into Consumer Products
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., January 14, 2003 -- MIPS Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS, MIPSB), a leading provider of industry standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, today revealed that leading electronics companies in the digital entertainment marketplace displayed numerous new MIPS-based products at the 2003 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week.
CES is one of the world's largest annual technology events where more than 100,000 visitors experience the latest leading electronics and services companies have to offer consumers, retailers and entertainment industry executives. The strong display of MIPS-based products underscores the breadth of innovation that is enabled by the company's open and flexible business model, as well as the ability of the MIPS® architecture to deliver a "high-impact" user experience to consumers.
Listed below by company name are a handful of MIPS-based devices that were displayed and awards given at CES '03.
ATI Technologies, Inc.
ATI Technologies made a number of MIPS-based product announcements at CES, including a design win with HUMAX Co. Ltd. for the RG-3010 IP set-top box, a design win with Plat' C2, Inc. for the BTBox (Broadband Terminal Box), and that ATI has delivered its industry-leading digital television technology to Proton Communication Technologies for the HT-5060 set-top box. All three design wins were based upon ATI's XILLEON 220 chip, which is an advanced and highly integrated 32-bit MIPS-based SOC suitable for a range of digital devices including set-top boxes and digital televisions.
Microsoft
Microsoft, a long time partner with MIPS Technologies, was awarded CES' "Best of Innovations Award" in the software/embedded technologies category for its Windows CE .NET operating system. The Innovation Awards recognize excellence in design and engineering, and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) selected winners based on achievement in user value, aesthetics, contribution to quality of life, and innovative qualities. MIPS Technologies has worked closely with Microsoft since the inception of the Windows CE operating system. In 2001, together with NEC Corp., the companies optimized Windows CE .NET for the 64-bit MIPS architecture, which is the only 64-bit architecture currently supported by Windows CE .NET. AMD and Toshiba are also among the MIPS Technologies licensees whose MIPS-based processors power Windows CE-based devices
Motorola Broadband Communications Sector
Motorola Broadband unveiled its vision for its "connected home," details of which were on display including a full product portfolio, many touting "plug and play functionality," of broadband solutions for consumers. The portfolio included the DCT5100 and DCT5200 digital set-top solutions, which are based upon 32-bit processors from MIPS Technologies. The DCT5100 includes a built-in DOCSIS 1.0-compliant cable modem for future interactive applications, and the Motorola HD DCT5200 includes a personal video recorder.
Oak Technology, Inc.
Oak Technology, a leading provider of embedded solutions for the optical storage, digital imaging, and digital home entertainment markets, announced the availability of its Cougar-G9 digital TV reference design for the Generation9™ SOC. The Cougar-G9 reference platform is a complete solution based on best-in-class technology from Oak's TeraLogic Group, a leader in integrated circuits, software and platforms for digital TV. Cougar-G9 features the Generation9 SOC architecture that is powered by a MIPS64™-based processor.
Philips
Royal Philips Electronics announced customer wins for its recently introduced DVD+R/+RW turnkey reference design. Among others, three DVD recorder makers - Daewoo Electronics, Mico Electric and Tae Young Telstar - have selected Philips' DVD+R/+RW reference design, which is built upon the company's Nexperia™ system solution that includes 32-bit MIPS technology. The three companies are introducing DVD+RW recorders at competitive price points, quickly accelerating the growth of this high volume market.
ViXS Systems, Inc.
ViXS conducted the first public demonstration of its integrated XCode/Matrix chipset, which offers simultaneous wireless video streaming to a variety of electronics devices. The company's XCode chip is based upon MIPS Technologies' 32-bit 4Km™ core. The demo enabled CES attendees to walk devices such as a Web Tablet across the Las Vegas Convention Center show floor while receiving broadcast video entertainment being streamed wirelessly from a centralized media server.
