MIPS Technologies Licenses 32-Bit Processor Core IP to Sunplus Technology for Next-Generation Consumer Electronics ProductsSunplus to Service Asian Markets, Including China, Using MIPS-Based™ Products
Taipei, Taiwan, Feb. 18, 2003 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, announced that Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd. (TAIEX: 2401, FTSE: SUPD) has taken a license for a range of 32-bit cores from MIPS Technologies, including the MIPS32™ 4KEc™ and 4Kp™ processor cores and SOC-it™ system controller. By transitioning to the MIPS architecture, Sunplus is ensuring its customers benefit from the extensive support software and third-party applications that are enabled by an industry-standard architecture.
Sunplus is the largest consumer IC design company in Taiwan. The company intends to use their MIPS® license to develop an array of consumer electronics devices that will service the growing consumer electronics markets, where DVD/VCD/S-VCD players are emerging as the standards for home entertainment platforms. Accordingly, advanced 32-bit SOC platforms are enabling technologies upon which these platforms will rely to deliver a dynamic user experience to the consumer.
"Increasingly designers of sophisticated SOCs who want to reduce development costs, increase system performance and speed time-to-market are finding an ideal solution in MIPS 32-bit cores," said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing for MIPS Technologies. "By licensing the latest products from MIPS, Sunplus ensures that their software investment is protected with an industry-standard architecture while taking advantage of the broad third party support available from leading tools companies."
"We chose the MIPS architecture because it is reliable and highly scalable," said Yarn -Chen Chen, president of Sunplus Technology. "With smaller die sizes, we have the flexibility to meet our design goals for cost sensitive applications, and deliver superior performance for digital still cameras (DSC), PDAs, interactive toys, set-top-boxes and many other products that are highly competitive in the market."
