Agere Systems licenses Bluetooth IP from NewLogic
Agere Systems licenses Bluetooth IP from NewLogicIP licensing deal paves way for new cost-effective Bluetooth chips and chipsets Lustenau, Austria; August 21st, 2001 - NewLogic, a leading supplier of Bluetooth intellectual property cores, today announced a licensing deal with Agere Systems, the world leader in communications components, for Bluetooth baseband IP products. The agreement will enable Agere to embed NewLogic's BOOST IP core into Bluetooth baseband processors and also combine Bluetooth baseband functionality with other IP to create system-level IC products for cellular phones. Agere is licensing NewLogic's BOOST CoreT and BOOST SoftwareT. The BOOSTT IP family includes a Bluetooth baseband processor, a full Bluetooth software protocol stack and a Bluetooth CMOS radio. These IP elements, when combined with a suitable microcontroller core, permit the implementation of a single chip Bluetooth solution using industry standard CMOS process technologies. "Licensing Bluetooth baseband IP is an essential part of our product strategy to offer customers complete system solutions," said Stan Swearingen, General Manager of Agere's Personal Wireless Solutions product group. "NewLogic's second-generation Bluetooth baseband IP core best meets our exacting requirements for robustness, quality and efficiency," he added. "We are particularly proud to be able to add Agere, one of the nine promoters of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group to our ever growing list of customers," said Hans-Peter Metzler, President and CEO of NewLogic. "The combination of Agere's systems and radio expertise and NewLogic's baseband know-how will pave the way for new low-cost, high-performance Bluetooth chips and chipsets." With a focus on providing complete Bluetooth solutions for communications applications such as cellular phones, Agere selected NewLogic's BOOST IP family because it meets a number of critical design demands including small size, the ability to integrate into current and future platforms, and scalability depending on the specific application. Agere expects to introduce products incorporating BOOST IP in the first quarter of 2002. Bluetooth wireless technology is the new cordless standard adopted by more than 2,400 companies throughout the world to link portable devices to mobile phones and PCs. It has spurred an unprecedented enthusiasm within the PC and communications industries. Its promises of small size, low-cost and interoperability have fuelled a burst of new ideas and application possibilities. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
