MIPS Technologies’ Processor Core Powers Infineon’s Voice-over-IP SolutionMIPS Technologies' Processor Core Powers Infineon's Voice-over-IP Solution MIPS32™ 4Kc™ Basis for Infineon's INCA-IP IC MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif,, April 14, 2003 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, announced today that its 32-bit 4Kc core was licensed by Infineon Technologies for development of advanced communications systems targeting the Internet Protocol (IP) phone market. This second core licensed by Infineon brings together their expertise in advanced integrated circuit design with the performance attributes of the MIPS® architecture to set new standards of security and performance for voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems. The INCA-IP IC is a single-chip solution for VoIP telephones that is the newest member of Infineon's Advance Telephony product family for digital telephones. The MIPS-based™ INCA-IP chip raises the performance standard of VoIP systems by being the first VoIP system chip to integrate hardware-accelerated encryption, enabling advanced network security support. Furthermore, the INCA-IP IC establishes a platform for IP phone manufacturers by providing functionality such as high voice quality, integrated conferencing and hands-free operation.
"MIPS cores provide proven performance, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and a broad base of third-party development tools, making the 4Kc core a natural choice for our on-board processor," said Christian Wolff, vice president of Infineon's wireline communications business group and general manager of the access business unit. "An additional factor in our decision was our ongoing software investment in the MIPS architecture, leveraging our design work with the 5Kc core, the basis of our EasyPort broadband communications controller."
"The high-performance aspects of our industry-standard architecture enable industry leaders, such as Infineon, to develop innovative products that address the complex security concerns of the VoIP market," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "With the addition of the 4Kc core to their portfolio of MIPS cores, Infineon now has access to the full range of performance capabilities of our industry-standard 32- and 64-bit architectures, and benefits from utilizing the broad offering of third-party tools available to MIPS licensees."
About INCA-IP The INCA-IP is fully compliant with the IEEE standard "Power over LAN" and ITU standard voice coding techniques -- including G.711, G.723, G.729 A/B and G.722 -- for IP phone applications, as well as advanced telephony features such as Caller-ID and speech recognition. The chip can be used in both SIP and H.323 "ready" terminals, and is fully compliant with the voice packet prioritization and port grouping VLAN standards (802.1Q and 802.1p).
The INCA-IP comes in a P-LBGA-324-3 package and is available now. System evaluation boards and toolkits to support software application development also are available. More information, including a product brief, is available on the web at www.infineon.com/inca-ip.
