Motorola Integrates ARM Core For i.MX21 Applications Processor
Motorola expands ARM core-based product roadmap for mobile multimedia applications on smart handheld devices
AUSTIN, TX AND CAMBRIDGE, UK - Oct. 1, 2003 –Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector, the world's leading producer of embedded processors, and ARM [(LSE:ARM}; Nasdaq: ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC processor solutions, today announced an extension to their strategic partnership with a new licensing agreement. Motorola has integrated the ARM926EJ-S™ core, incorporating ARM® Jazelle® Java acceleration technology, to be integrated into their i.MX21 processor for mobile multimedia handheld devices. Motorola has been an ARM Partner since the architecture license announced in November 2000 and the company continues to license and incorporate ARM technology into its applications processor portfolio. "With the launch of our new multi-media processor, we are extending a relationship we have had with ARM in the applications processor space for two years. ARM cores enhance our ability to deliver high-performance and highly integrated mobile multimedia solutions," said Omid Tahernia, vice president and director, Wireless and Mobile Systems Group, Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector. "This latest core supports enhancements that we have added to our product portfolio including improved multimedia, Java performance, security and connectivity applications and we plan to continue working with ARM on defining next-generation feature sets to expand the market." "This latest licensing agreement enables us to reach further with Motorola by providing the technology for the most advanced mobile devices on the market," said John Rayfield, VP, US Marketing, ARM. "By partnering with such a high-volume and broadly-based wireless and embedded industry leader, we can enhance our leading positions in this increasingly important, high-performance product market." The ARM926EJ-S core is a single core solution for microcontroller, DSP and Java applications. It is fully synthesizable, and features a Jazelle technology-enhanced 32-bit RISC CPU for optimum flexibility and performance. The ARMv5TEJ instruction set includes 16-bit fixed point DSP instructions to enhance performance of signal processing algorithms. In addition it incorporates Thumb® technology for reduced cost memory systems, and Jazelle technology for efficient, high-performance Java bytecode execution.
