Metrowerks and ARC Launch “Instant-On” Development Solution for Motorola MPC5200-Based Devices
Comprehensive Platform Designed for Fast, Cost-Effective Development of Hardware Solutions for Automotive, Networking, Industrial Control and Consumer Electronics Devices
Austin, Texas and San Jose, Calif., November 17, 2003 — Metrowerks and ARC International (LSE: ARK) have collaborated to offer an integrated hardware and software development solution for the powerful and versatile Motorola MPC5200 processor containing a PowerPC core with the introduction of the Lite5200 Evaluation Development Kit from Metrowerks and ARC. Offering designers out-of-box functionality, the kit includes Motorola's Lite5200 evaluation board based on the Motorola MPC5200 processor, along with evaluation versions of the ARC MQX real-time operating system (RTOS), ARC RTCS TCP/IP networking stacks, and the Metrowerks Code Warrior™ Development Studio, mobileGT™ Processor Edition, Version 8.0. “For developers, time to market is critical,” said Michael O'Donnell, marketing director, Transportation and Standard Products, Metrowerks. “Together with ARC, Metrowerks is now able to help developers eliminate the time-consuming hardware and software integration phase of development by providing them with a comprehensive tool set for the Motorola MPC5200 -- one of the industry's leading processors. Our relationship with ARC has allowed us to deliver a development solution that speeds time to market and helps embedded developers. The kit combines the robust ARC MQX RTOS and RTCS TCP/IP software embedded in the on-board flash memory, which allows developers to run applications directly on the hardware, and is designed to provide “instant on” start-up capabilities. ARC and Metrowerks plan to add evaluation software for the CAN and USB 1.1 Host interface with a mass storage application by the end of the year. “This kit provides a comprehensive integrated hardware software evaluation and development solution that is full-featured and high performance for our customers,” said Bill Pfaff, vice president and director of Motorola's Digital Audio, Radio and Telematics organization. “By enabling embedded systems designers to begin evaluation out-of-the-box, we can help developers focus on shortening the evaluation process, developing their applications and completing their projects on-time with differentiation and at a lower cost. “ARC has had a long-standing history of delivering a broad range of connectivity in a single, tightly integrated package,” said Bill Bernecki, vice president of software at ARC. “Software support for the rich feature set such as Ethernet today, and CAN device and USB host stack support in Phase two of the release, meets the key requirements of MPC5200-based applications including gateways, instrumentation, global positioning systems and video processing devices. The Lite5200 Evaluation Development Kit includes the following components:
The development kit costs $945 and is available now from Metrowerks. The Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio included with the system is an evaluation version, time-limited to 30 days from installation. ARC's MQX RTOS and RTCS TCP/IP networking stack included in the system are execution-limited, evaluation versions. Fully licensed versions of each software product can be obtained separately today through ARC or Metrowerks distributors. The CodeWarrior Development Studio can be purchased in single-seat quantities for $5994. The USB Host Developer's Kit is expected to be available by the end of the year. Pricing for a single product license of the ARC MQX software starts at $12,500 USD and is provided in full source code with no royalty fees. Software bundles containing RTCS TCP/IP networking stack and protocols are also available starting at $16,500 USD.
