MIPS Architecture Expands Set-Top Box Market Leadership Into Fast-Growing Satellite SegmentMOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., December 15, 2003 -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS) today announced that it's market leadership within the digital set-top box market took a significant step forward with Broadcom's MIPS-Based(TM) design wins in Echostar's satellite DISH 322 and DISH Player-DVR 522 products. According to various market research firms, the MIPS® architecture is a leader within the digital set-top box market with close to 30 percent share, one of the highest among any microprocessor architecture. These design wins are the latest to be publicly celebrated by leading MIPS Technologies licensees. With this announcement, the Echostar Dish satellite players join MIPS-Based boxes from OEMs such as:
"For years the MIPS architecture has been recognized by OEMs and semiconductor companies as the leading platform within the digital set-top box space," said Tony Massinimi, chief technologist at Semico Research Corporation. "These latest design wins further cement the architecture's dominance and indicate its ongoing success in this high-growth market." MIPS: The Core of the User Experience in Set-Top Boxes To solve these challenges, SoC designers are turning to MIPS Technologies' industry-standard technology and high performance processors to ease system integration, lower overall silicon cost and standardize upon a flexible design platform to leverage future designs. As the leading architecture within the STB and integrated DTV markets, MIPS-based designers have access to optimized technologies such as Audio and Video codecs, Operating Systems - such as Linux, Windows CE .NET and VxWorks - Middleware, and applications such as Interactive TV. "Leading providers of STB solutions, such as ATI, Broadcom, NEC, Philips and others, are turning to the MIPS architecture to ensure their products exceed market requirements and deliver an enhanced user experience to consumers," said Jeff Sasagawa, director of market development and system solutions at MIPS Technologies. "High definition TV, PVR functionality and the latest interactive and on-demand services are just some of the important features enabled by the MIPS architecture. We applaud Broadcom on this latest design win and look forward to their continued success."
