MIPS Technologies Uses Virage Logic High-Speed Memory IP To Demonstrate High Performance of New 24K Core Family
Customers of MIPS32® 24K Core Family Assured of Quick Time-to-Market For Performance-Hungry Applications
FREMONT and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 5, 2004 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS) and Virage Logic Corp. (Nasdaq: VIRL) announced today that Virage Logic’s Area, Speed and Power (ASAP) Memory High-Speed (HS) IP was used to demonstrate the industry-leading performance of the new MIPS32® 24K™ family of processor cores (see related announcement from MIPS Technologies). “Our strategy is to ensure that 24K core customers can achieve industry leading performance in a small silicon footprint and within the constraints of tight development schedules. By offering a proven, reliable core that can incorporate industry-leading technology, such as Virage Logic’s ASAP Memory product, we are helping SoC designers reach their goals in a standard environment,” said Victor Peng, vice president of engineering at MIPS Technologies. Increasingly complex System-on-Chips (SoCs) require greater amounts of memory, which present significant wafer yield issues. Using Virage Logic’s silicon-proven embedded memory IP, designers can integrate small, moderate or large amounts of on-chip memory to reduce overall system cost and size, while meeting time-to-market requirements. The ASAP Memory HS product is suited for high-volume applications where high-speed, area-efficient memory implementation is a requirement. “By going the extra mile and using Virage Logic’s high-speed memory IP to help ensure the 24K cores perform as intended, MIPS Technologies is giving its customers greater leverage to quickly achieve their design goals with a significant performance and time-to-market advantage,” said Jim Ensell, vice president of marketing for Virage Logic. “Virage Logic is pleased to be a part of the launch of the highest-performing synthesizable processor cores in the industry and congratulates MIPS Technologies on its 24K core family.” About ASAP Memory The ASAP Memory product line provides the largest selection of silicon-proven embedded memories designed for testability and manufacturability. The product line comprises High-Density (HD) memories optimized for area, High-Speed (HS) memories optimized for speed, and Ultra-Low-Power (ULP) memories optimized for battery-powered and hand-held applications. To evaluate the 24K cores, MIPS Technologies used the ASAP Memory HS memory product. ASAP Memory features include:
The MIPS32 24K core family, which includes the 24Kc™, 24Kc Pro, 24Kf™ and 24Kf Pro versions, offers performance from 400 to 550 MHz worst case in a 0.13 micron process, the highest frequency available in 32-bit synthesizable cores for embedded markets, while minimizing design time and reducing product costs. Tailored SoC design methodologies, an Open Core Protocol (OCP) interconnect structure, standard libraries and on-chip memories from industry-leading companies help speed time-to-market, an important advantage for a processor core suited to embedded consumer applications such as digital and interactive TVs, set-top boxes and DVD players.
