New Linux Support for the ARC 700 Configurable CoreSAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 15 2004 – ARC International (LSE: ARK), the world leader in configurable CPU/DSP processor cores and application platforms, today announced embedded Linux support for the newest configurable processor core: the ARC 700. The Linux kernel and tool chain allow customers to fully take advantage of an open source development and runtime system – in conjunction with a configurable, licensable processor core. The ARC 700 is designed to provide customers a high-performance embedded core, which is configurable to deliver very small die size and silicon cost. The GNU tool chain supports the ARC 700's DSP capabilities, while Linux provides process-level protection. Linux support is made available through Codito Technologies, a leading provider of high-end embedded-system software solutions. Codito's Linux Support package, comprising a BSP (board support package) for the ARC family of processors, along with custom and extended support for the GNU tool chain, Linux kernel, and drivers, will be available on October 1, 2004. The ARC version of Linux leverages all the features in the Linux kernel targeted at embedded systems, including uCLinux, XIP (eXecute In Place), and compressed file systems for deeply embedded systems with limited memory. Full Kernel pre-emption, allowing better soft real-time and system responsiveness, is also supported. The Linux kernel is fine tuned and optimized for the ARC 700, utilizing features such as bit-operation instructions, 16-bit instructions for code compaction provided by the ARCompact™ ISA, multiple address spaces through the ARC 700 MMU, and TLB flushing. "ARC's leadership in providing configurable processor cores, along with the broad market appeal of Linux, is a powerful combination," said Derek Meyer, ARC vice-president of marketing. "Our customers can now configure a small die-size processor supported by an industry standard and royalty-free operating system for their next generation, high-volume SOCs. "ARC 700 with Linux customers can leverage Codito's experienced Linux team and derive benefits in terms of reduced risks, reduced development costs and greatly improved time-to-performance on Linux. Codito's Linux for the ARC 700 has been built with its extendibility in mind, to allow customers to take full advantage of its capabilities in their devices," added Patanjali Somayaji, CEO, Codito Technologies. AvailabilityLinux for the ARC 700 core will be available on October 1, 2004. Support is provided by Codito Technologies www.codito.com or info@condito.com or +91 20 24433909 (telephone). The ARC 700 core is available now from ARC: www.arc.com or 408-437-3400. ARC 700 Processor CoreThe ARC 700 processor is a 7 stage 32-bit scalar RISC architecture targeted at next generation applications that require high performance and small size. As with other ARC processors, the ARC 700 is a configurable and extendible processor family with powerful DSP capabilities. In addition, the ARC 700 implements a memory management unit (MMU) and processing modes to support feature-rich and secure OSs, such as Linux. Unlike other processors in its class, the ARC 700 does not sacrifice area for performance and is the smallest 400 MHz processor available. ARC International is a world leader in low-power, high-performance 32-bit RISC CPU/DSP configurable processor cores, real-time operating systems and development tools for embedded system design. ARC's configurable and extendible cores assist customers in the development of next generation digital media, consumer and communications devices, resulting in lower cost, higher performance System-on-Chip products.
