MIPS Announces Expansion of Architecture License with Broadcom
MIPS Technologies’ Code Compression Technology to Be Used in Broadcom® 32-Bit MIPS-Based™ Products
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 16 , 2004 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS) announced today that long-time customer Broadcom Corporation has licensed its MIPS16e™ code compression application-specific extension (ASE). The MIPS16e ASE reduces memory by as much as 40 percent and therefore lowers silicon cost, enabling top performance at an attractive price point in a broad range of consumer and business applications. Broadcom has been a MIPS Technologies licensee since 1998, using the MIPS32 and MIPS64® architectures along with the MIPS64 5Kf™ core to develop high-performance, power-efficient processors for set-top box and broadband communications applications. The company also has obtained licenses in the past for the MIPS-3D™ and MDMX™ ASEs, which accelerate graphics and media processing. "Broadcom's expertise in set top boxes has been leveraged by using MIPS Technologies architecture and cores to succeed in both high- and low-end set-top box and digital TV applications, and wireless networking," said Daniel Marotta, group vice president of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group. "Our strategic commitment to the MIPS architecture enables Broadcom to meet both the high-performance and cost requirements these applications demand. It is also supported by hundreds of development tools, which are key to rapid time-to-volume production." "MIPS Technologies continues to develop innovative processor architecture and processor core solutions. Broadcom's expertise in SOC design and system architecture, together with the synergy of our broad product line, results in a veritable feast of market solutions for broadband and digital consumer markets," said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "We look forward to continued success in meeting the ongoing demand for higher performance, lower power consumption and low cost." About MIPS Technologies
