Philips and ARM Collaboration Cuts Time-To-Market With Nexperia Mobile Developer Kit
Integrated solution provides complete development platform for mobile phones
EINDHOVEN, THE NETHERLANDS AND CAMBRIDGE, UK – Feb. 14 2005 – Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI), and ARM [(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq: ARMHY)] today announced at the 3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France, that the two companies have collaborated to offer a complete development kit for the market-leading NexperiaTM Cellular System Solution 6120. Using leading-edge ARM® RealView® tools, the Nexperia Mobile Developer Kit (NMDK) makes integrating multimedia applications into a mobile phone simple, significantly reducing time-to-market for Philips’ customers. This makes the NMDK ideal to implement applications such as the capture, playback and streaming of real-time 3GPP and MPEG-4 audio and video files, as well as additional features such as gaming, security and audio enhancements. As an increasing number of mobile multimedia applications are being implemented, there is a need for them to be integrated into the core of the mobile platform. The NMDK enables developers to use the platform immediately, bringing ‘plug and play’ capabilities to application integration. Incorporating industry-leading components such as the ARM RealView toolchain, which includes the Metrowerks’ CodeWarrior™ Integrated Development Environment (IDE), the kit contains all the elements needed to customize and integrate multimedia applications on Philips’ Nexperia Cellular System Solution 6120. “As mobile phone development cycles continue to shorten and the number of multimedia applications for the phone continues to grow, developers are under increasing pressure to provide greater functionality in a shorter timeframe,” commented Gert-Jan Kaat, senior vice president, Business Unit Mobile Communications, Philips Semiconductors. “This integrated development kit is designed to meet that need, offering a complete solution that can be easily implemented without the need for configuration. With the time-to-market advantages offered by the Nexperia Mobile Developer Kit, our customers can focus their efforts on competitive product differentiation.” The NMDK consists of a software protocol stack, software solutions for mobile-based multimedia applications, the ARM RealView Developer Kit for Philips’ Nexperia Cellular System Solution, data sheets and application notes. The kit enables writing, compilation, debugging and integration of systems for the ARM processor-based Philips solution. “ARM has collaborated with Philips to produce the RealView Developer Kit for Philips’ Nexperia Cellular System Solution to support the ARM9™ processor family-based Nexperia platforms. This represents the latest customized developer kit in the targeted family of products available from ARM,” said Andrew Frame, product manager, Development Systems, ARM. “These RealView development tools offer fully optimizing ISO C and C++ compilation tools, a powerful GUI debugger and JTAG run control hardware which, when used with the Philips Nexperia Cellular System Solution, makes the Nexperia Mobile Developer Kit the most complete and advanced tool in the market”. The industry-leading Nexperia Cellular System Solution 6120 is an ARM9 processor family-based GSM/GPRS/EDGE multimedia system solution.
