Virage Logic's High-Density ASAP Memory(TM) IP Used in Development of Low-leakage Wireless Multimedia Processors From NVIDIA
High-volume Consumer Applications Benefit From Virage Logic Area-optimized, High-density Memories
MUNICH, Germany and FREMONT, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today's handheld consumer devices demand robust functionality and performance on the one hand, and extended battery life on the other. Virage logic delivers on both of those criteria with the delivery of Area, Speed and Power (ASAP) High Density (HD) memories. Semiconductor companies must carefully select the intellectual property (IP) they employ to ensure optimum performance without paying a power penalty. NVIDIA Corporation a worldwide leader in graphics and digital media processors, recently made this choice when it tapped Virage Logic Corporation (Nasdaq: VIRL), a leading provider of semiconductor IP platforms, for a robust embedded memory solution for use in its NVIDIA(R) GoForce(TM) 3D 4800 wireless multimedia processor (WMP). The NVIDIA GoForce 3D 4800 WMP, which is manufactured on UMC's .15-micron low-leakage process, incorporates Virage Logic's Area, Speed and Power (ASAP) Memory High Density (HD) memories. Virage Logic's ASAP Memory HD products are superior for high-volume applications, optimized for area, and targeted for sub-megabit designs. "In evaluating our memory IP options it became apparent that Virage Logic's ASAP Memory HD was an excellent solution for the NVIDIA GoForce 3D 4800 WMP, fabricated on UMC's .15-micron low-leakage process," said Brian Angel, senior director of engineering for NVIDIA wireless media processor business. "This is our second engagement with Virage Logic, and we value their superior customer support." "NVIDIA leadership and technology innovation in the graphics and multimedia space is undisputed," said Jim Ensell, vice president of marketing, Virage Logic. "Their selection of our memory IP for use in one of its high- volume wireless multimedia processors helps validate our own technology leadership." ASAP Memory's HD area optimization focuses on the design of the bit cells, which are developed using a full custom approach and extensive interconnect modeling, allowing for area-efficient implementation. Virage Logic builds a library of handcrafted leaf cells designed for each foundry's design rules, in contrast with traditional memory compilers that build leaf cells that use a common denominator of design rules for different foundries. Virage Logic's approach makes no area-inefficient compromises. In addition, Virage Logic's patented dual-port bit cell results in the smallest commercially available dual-port SRAMs. About Virage Logic's ASAP Memory The ASAP Memory Product line includes three families of embedded memory products. The High-Speed embedded memories are designed for performance with typical speeds of 1GHz (2KX16, CM=16, TSMC 0.13u G process, 1.2 volts). The High-Density family addresses high-density applications and is optimized for minimum area to save silicon costs. ASAP High-Density memories are used in consumer products such as HDTVs and set-top boxes. The Ultra-Low-Power family targets portable applications that require low power consumption, such as 802.11b devices, cell phones and hand-held games.
