With Moore's Law running into barriers all over the place, it is becoming clear that the shrinking of digital circuits is not going to be a particularly profitable pursuit.
When, every two years, you could double an IC's functions, double its speed and halve its power requirement, it was not difficult to sell your new products. Even the most intransigent customer couldn't resist that sort of sell.
