Mindspeed Announces VoIP-Over-Cable Software For Comcerto Family of VoIP Processors
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 11, 2005 -- Mindspeed Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced a suite of VoIP-over-Cable software for its Comcerto voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) processor family. The new software combined with Comcerto Series processors offers the industry’s most highly optimized family of semiconductor solutions for implementing CableLabs®’ PacketCable™ initiative for advanced, real-time digital multimedia services over two-way cable plant.
Built on the industry's highly successful cable modem infrastructure, PacketCable and PacketCable Multimedia networks use IP technology to enable a wide range of multimedia services, such as IP telephony, multimedia conferencing, interactive gaming, and general multimedia applications. A member of the initiative, Mindspeed incorporates currently specified codecs and other features, and is committed to deploying additional voice-over-cable features as these specifications evolve.
“Mindspeed is already a pioneering leader in delivering complete system-on-chip solutions for wireline VoIP media gateways, and our new Comcerto VoIP-over-Cable offering takes this expertise into the rapidly emerging packet cable telephony market,” said Preet Virk, vice president of marketing for Mindspeed’s Multiservice Access business unit. “Comcerto forms the core of a highly integrated and fully optimized solution that MSOs can use to deploy high-quality, low-latency VoIP services within their cable plant. Two of the top equipment suppliers who are deploying their products into major North American VoIP-over-Cable service roll-outs already use Comcerto processors.”
“The number of cable VoIP subscribers in North America jumped 900 percent between 2003 and 2004, with cable companies nearly doubling their spending in VoIP equipment to keep up with surging subscriber growth,” said Kevin Mitchell, directing analyst, Service Provider Voice and Data, Infonetics Research. “Ample growth is expected in subscribers and cable VoIP infrastructure market, especially as PacketCable Multimedia matures, creating demand for PacketCable-compliant systems and components.”
Product Details:
Mindspeed’s highly integrated and comprehensive Comcerto system-on-chip (SoC) hardware and software solution offers telecommunications equipment manufacturers the convenience and performance of a single device that seamlessly transmits highly secure, carrier-class quality voice across wireless and wireline networks. Integrating both packet and signal processing provides an extremely robust and flexible architecture which, combined with Mindspeed’s industry-proven software suite, enables equipment manufacturers to speed time to market for next-generation products.
The addition of a comprehensive new suite of PacketCable-based codecs and other voice-over-cable software enables Mindspeed to bring Comcerto’s carrier-class voice quality and low-latency processing performance to PBX systems and large media gateways. Comcerto’s Voice-over-Packet feature set incorporates the full range of PacketCable codecs including G.711, G.728, iLBC, G.729e and T.38 Fax relay along with support for, TTY/TTD, RTCP and G.168-2002-compliant echo cancellation. The software suite also includes Mindspeed’s proprietary zero-delay implementation of the G.711 Appendix 1 PLC, and an adaptive jitter buffer for optimized performance. All codecs include Mindspeed’s voice activity detector, which includes the company’s proprietary music detection algorithm to further improve performance.
Mindspeed's Comcerto VoIP processors combine high-performance digital signal processing (DSP) cores and a packet-processing engine with industry-standard streaming packet interfaces to provide a high-density VoIP system-on-a-chip. Comcerto processors offer telecommunications equipment manufacturers a simple and cost-effective solution for designing complete systems capable of transporting carrier-class voice across both wireless and wireline networks, ideally suited to the convergence of voice and mobile technology that is seen in next generation VoIP based cable telephony applications.
The Comcerto Series supports a full range of channel densities from four-port PBX systems to large media gateways supporting thousands of subscribers.
Pricing and Availability:
The Comcerto VoIP-over-Cable software suite is available immediately. Pricing varies by processor. In OEM quantities of 5,000 for Mindspeed’s highest-density Comcerto 700 Series carrier-class processor, the VoIP-over-Cable software suite is priced at an additional $40 per device.
