LSI Logic to Collaborate With Avnet and Harris Corporation to Develop Advanced SOC Communications for Homeland Security
- Harris RF Communications Division Awarded Contract for Use in Joint Tactical Radio System Program and Other Homeland Security Applications
- LSI Logic Chosen for Powerful Combination of G12(TM) Process, FlexStream(TM) Design Methodology, Advanced Packaging and Rich CoreWare(R) IP
- Avnet's Specialized Design Expertise Critical in Meeting Aggressive Production Schedule
MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced a collaboration with Avnet (NYSE: AVT) and Harris Corporation's (NYSE: HRS) RF Communications Division to achieve aggressive time-to-market requirements for an advanced ASIC. Harris is developing a specialty ASIC (Sierra(TM) II) that encrypts radio communications for the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program and other homeland security applications.
"LSI Logic and Avnet have worked closely with Harris during the critical development phase of our ASIC design and have been instrumental in helping us meet our aggressive schedule for production," said Todd Moore, senior engineering manager, Harris RF Communications Division. "LSI Logic's 20-year ASIC heritage combined with Avnet's unique design expertise for meeting specialized demands for encryption have enabled us to bring our product to fruition."
In February 2003, Harris was awarded a contract from the JTRS Joint Program office, Arlington, Virginia, to develop software using Sierra II, which replaces legacy external encryption hardware functionality. The new software will support JTRS legacy and newly defined waveforms. In addition, Harris was selected in June 2003 to provide its Sierra-based Cryptographic Subsystem (CSS) for Cluster 1 of the U.S. Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program.
The full-custom ASIC, designed using the LSI Logic G12(TM) 0.18-micron process technology, is at the heart of a device Harris designed to provide selectable, programmable encryption technology. Previously, this type of radio used hardwired logic to mathematically encrypt voice, data and text prior to transmission. The drawback of that approach is that encryption logic field updates required a technician to replace the electronics with new parts. The new Harris design uses a software-based programmable technique that updates the radio's encryption capabilities as needed.
"Harris is a leading supplier of military tactical radios for worldwide defense forces, and we are pleased to be working closely with them to deliver a unique solution that provides a competitive edge," said Mario Maccariello, marketing director, Communications and ASIC Product Group, LSI Logic Corporation. "LSI Logic's superior physical design expertise and innovative package technologies provide Harris with the Right-First-Time, On Time(TM) high-performance ASICs needed to meet specialized military requirements."
Avnet Design Services' experienced system engineering design team collaborated with LSI Logic to complete the design in the shortest possible time. With experience ranging from hardware design to embedded software development, Avnet Design Services can provide complete engineering assistance to meet any application.
"Our ASIC design engineers are experts in LSI Logic ASICs, design tools and design methodology," said Rafael Cruz, vice president ASIC Design Services, Avnet Electronics Marketing. "To meet this unique application it was critical for Harris to have a distributor that offers a total solution with supply-chain friendly products."
LSI Logic's success with companies, such as Harris, has helped position the company as the leading ASIC solution provider. The LSI Logic CoreWare design program is silicon intellectual property (IP) that is productized with all the required deliverables to link easily into the LSI Logic FlexStream design system so that customers realize their system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs using pre-configured IP RapidChip(TM) platforms or full-custom ASICs in less time.
